OBAMA’S REPORT CARD: C MINUS
OJAI, CALIFORNIA January 25, 2010
Here in normally arid southern California, we’ve just endured a week of torrential rains, tornados, flash floods, and mud slides. Some roads have even turned to rivers in the great western monsoon.
But these tempests are nothing compared to last week’s electoral storm that greeted President Barack Obama’s first anniversary in office.

Conservative Republican Scott Brown’s dramatic upset victory in the Massachusetts race for the late Senator Teddy Kennedy’s seat has left Democrats shaken and frightened.  Massachusetts is the most Democratic of all states; if Republicans won there, no place is safe for the Democrats.

The loss of Kennedy’s feudal seat was as stunning as if a Protestant had become pope.

Republicans are cock-a-hoop, crowing that an anti-Obama revolution has begun.  They hope American voters will forget the nation’s  economic melt-down and wars overseas occurred when Republicans held in power.   Voters do have notoriously short memories.

The upset was due to voter’s fear and anger over America persistent high unemployment, the Wall Street rescue, gargantuan deficits,  and Obama’s unpopular health plan.

Instead of focusing on the economy, the president wasted a year trying to implement his awkward health plan.  Many Americans just don’t want to pay health costs for the poor.

Obama’s disappointing, lackluster first year record  is also mirrored in his foreign policies.

The new leader who promised to bring change has largely failed to do so, and has continued or expanded many of the most pernicious policies of the Bush years.  Liberals who had hoped for glasnost and perestroika instead got Bush’s third term with a kinder, smiling, intelligent face.

The Mideast continues to be America’s most trying foreign problem.  What the west calls terrorism stems from the Muslim world’s fury over the endless agony of Palestine, the US-led wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and mounting raids against Somalia and Yemen.   It has next to nothing to do with Islam or cultural hatred, as George W. Bush so dishonestly claimed.

Osama bin Laden warned, `there will be no peace in America until there is peace in Palestine.’

Unfortunately, he may be right.  The Christmas airline hysteria caused by a young Nigerian with incendiary underpants was a graphic example.

Barack Obama’s vow to halt Israeli annexation of the West Bank and engineer a fair Arab-Israeli peace  has turned into a humiliating fiasco for the president.

The White House’s demand that Israel cease building settlements – and particularly so in illegally occupied East Jerusalem - was rejected with contempt by Israel’s hardline Prime Mininster, Benjamin Netanyahu.

Hillary Clinton even stabbed boss Obama in the back by lauding Israel’s “restrained” settlement policies, a clear sign of her future political ambitions if Obama falters.

Dismaying his liberal supporters, Europeans and the entire Muslim world, which had high hopes for the new “peace president,” Obama is expanding the pointless war in Afghanistan,  entrenching a permanent US presence in Iraq, and intensifying US military operations in Somalia, and Yemen, as well as North and West Africa.

Obama is under mounting pressure to launch an air war against Iran. So far, Obama has sensibly resisted. But as Obama’s presidency weakens, and mid-term elections grow closer, he may be forced into a major military confrontation with Iran, which shows no signs of giving into to American threats over its nuclear program.

The president just asked Congress for an additional $33 billion this year to fund the trillion-dollar Afghan and Iraq wars.  The costs of these inherited conflicts - that now belong to Obama - are being financed by emergency loans, not taxes, as they should be.

Future generations will pay for these colonial misadventures that have so far cost $1 trillion.
If American’s taxes were to go up to properly finance these colonial wars, popular outrage would swiftly end them.

By contrast, Obama has improved frayed US relations with Europe, in large part due to his personal popularity on the continent.  Relations with Russia, however, remain jagged.  On the plus side, Obama has apparently dropped Bush’s dangerously provocative plan to bring Ukraine and Georgia into NATO and to build a major anti-ballistic radar near Russia’s border in favor of a smaller, less capable system.

The US-India entente, begun by Bush, is moving ahead apace.  America’s arms industry is drooling at the thought of huge contracts with India.

But every American step closer to India increases   tensions with India’s rival, China, which sees the new US-Indian axis as a blatant attempt to surround it.

Meanwhile, the Obama administration is getting sucked ever deeper into the growing, increasingly dangerous mess in volatile Pakistan where anti-American hatred has reached alarming intensity.

The president disappointingly failed to normalize relations with Cuba while cozying up to other Communist regimes. Nor has he managed to yet close America’s gulags at Guantanamo, Cuba, and Bagram, Afghanistan, or end many of the Bush administration’s anti-democratic security measures.

Obama backed away from pursuing government officials who conducted torture, kidnapping and illegal surveillance of American citizens.

In sum, a very disappointing year from a man who inspired so many.

Thanks to Washington’s financial `rescue,’ America’s big five banks now control 40% of all deposits nationally. In spite of a proposed new bank tax and some tepid restrictions of gambling with depositor money, big finance seem too often to  be giving the Obama administration its  marching orders.

Goldman Sachs rules while Washington floods the world with depreciating US dollars.

Obama failed to grasp the levers of power and wasted time.   He took on four of Washington’s most powerful lobbies – Wall Street, the Israel lobby, the military-industrial complex, and medical insurance – and lost all these battles.  Many Americans are left with the unhappy conviction that Obama has become a prisoner of these special interests.

Meanwhile, the Republicans seem to be rising from the dead, revivified by Scott Brown’s upset victory in Massachusetts. Watch for Brown to be shortly hailed as the party’s next standard bearer.

Sounds like it's time for Canada to build a security wall on it's southern border.

If US continues this downward spiral, we'll be flooded with illegal Yankee immigrants.

might be a contraction for it is?

Dead wrong, Shibboleth. The possessive is "its", while the contraction is "it's"..."it is" contracted. So, memorize this: "It's (it is) a smart dog that scratches its (possessive) own fleas." franc black said: "... it's time..." he could have said: "It is time..."

But do tell: why would you pick on something so inconseqential....!?, especially when you don't have a clue what you're talking about....???

Looks like it is you who is "dead wrong", Desoc.
Shibboleth was referring to the second "it's" in Franc Black's sentence:
"...to build a security wall on it's southern border."
, which should be "its" in this case: "...on its southern border."

Dead right. I didn't see that second 'its', which is of course possessive. Touché. I just have such an immediate reaction to these grammar fascists. As much as pros should write well, and we should be able to expect that, the content of bloggers' posts is what is important, and I find it petty to pick at an apostrophy, rather than the content.

@Desoc: should be "apostrophe", not "apostrophy".

What is not petty? Isn't any kind of just criticism valid, if not, in the view of some, substantive? Perseverance is necessary to establish perfection, afterall.

Very good piece Mr. Margolis! I will not draw swords with you on this one, as I agree with your assertions whole heartedly. I wrote a blog post on Obama’s ascension to power prior to him taking office and now I’m embarrassed at having supported him in the piece. I was planning on writing another “report card” type post (more to educate myself during the process than to enlightened my five or six readers) but I think you have it pretty much covered, so I won’t bother. I’ll go back to dreaming about change instead.

Obama was brought in to fool public as 'peace president' to start new wars. He's doing his job just fine. People who know a thing or two about world politics were writing about this even before he became president.
America was paying to one side before but now they are also paying to Taliban for safe routes. Way to go America!!

Eric,
You lead an exotic and unusual life, traveling here and there. May we expect an autobiography? Few people are as well-versed in modern politics. Certainly you and Gwynn Dyer are two pundits who can actually accurately predict events.

Eric, America looks to me like its flushing itself down the toilet. You served your country well in the Vietnam War and do so today by being a courageous voice of truth and reason. But even your faith must be eroding, n'est-ce pas? If you were to choose a country other than the US to live, i.e. a country with a future, by which I mean relative economic stability, social cohesion, culture (not necessarily ancient), where you would feel welcome, which would it be?

On Cuba, I share your disappointment re: Obama not seeming to be able to close Gitmo. How lame is that?!! Moreover, the US should hand Guantanamo back to Cuba and so end US pretensions regarding that very special country and to meaningfully demonstrate a wish for friendship. Heck, Vietnam also defeated the US in a war and is communist and yet the US has a free trade agreement with them.

Hilary. What a case. She is a Republican-Israeli mole in the Administration, lusting for power. She would leap at the chance to use military and political power to feed her grand ego. She is an exaggerated version of Margaret Thatcher. Except Maggie was only hostage to her ideology, not special interests as well.

Doom and gloom is the order of the day. Think I'll get me a scotch....

I have to agree with most of the sentiment regarding President Obama’s grade in his first year of service as president of the U.S.. Clearly he has not implemented the promised change he so eloquently professed during his campaign but rather has followed the same course as his predecessor. The American government has allowed the foreign and domestic policies of their country to be lobbied ,influenced and controlled by foreign governments to point where ordinary Americans have lost the freedom and liberty they once praised so highly or in other words they have been sold out by the corporate fascist elite.

The rich buy their US Presidents then use them to extort money from the American taxpayer. The American people gladly give their money and their children because they have been made into mindless brainwashed flag wavers from a very young age.The rich don't wave any flag but their own.

Exactly Archie. Plus the weak US social supports - health care, unemployment insurance, non-portability of health insurance, general atmosphere of fear - all work to keep the noses of the masses focused on carving out a living and not thinking enough about what's happening in the bigger world around them. Accentuating the "looking out for number one" mentality is a weak education system that emphasizes "hand on heart for my flag" rather than teaching people how to think more critically, including how to appraise more objectively other more humane societies. The vast majority of the media is controlled by neo-cons, most of whom are unbelievably ignorant, and those that aren't are too clever by half, knowing how to use the tools at their disposal to shape public thinking and domestic and foreign policy. America the Beautiful? Maybe for the elite who exploit the masses whose ignorance they cultivate, including by financial barriers to higher education. Unless you're an athlete of course, then you get admitted and passed automatically in exchange for bringing glory to your school.

Its called Plutocracy or Corporatocracy - rich people and corporations dictate policies and mandates. Governments follow blindly. As for the average people, they are no better than the serfs of the middle ages, only difference is, they think they are being taken care of.

The slick used car salesman has done his job. The American people and a great deal of suckers from overseas like us who hooted for Obama are now taken for a ride of their lifetime. We knew the promises would take a rough ride,go against special interests, racial bias, and a monumental effort to reach at least some of the goals that we hoped and prayed. The onus lay in the leadership and steadfastness of the man at the wheels, who now seems to be driving with fogged windshield and instructions from guys in the backseat.

The economy is not abstract, its nickels and dime and with trillions of dollars in the red,you don't have to be a wizard of oz to fix it or find a way out. The foremost priority is to curb your spending, tighten the belt and drill your way out. I do not suggest US put the Security issue in the back burner, but scaling down 2 unnecessary wars with neo-imperialistic motives would be a win win situation.

The Health care was an uphill battle with the special interest who for ages are feeding on the blood of the poor and needy. Why then did Obama leave it to the Congress to bloat it to gargantuan proportions which leave aside run can barely stumble. He has regrettably chosen to disregard rational and considered advise from many quarters and now apparently in the grip of a kitchen cabinet akin to the Bush era. To rate him now is an exercise in redundancy, come election time the results will speak for itself___its already showing.

Obama's grandest failure is that he surrounds himself with same adivisors reponsible for the financial and political disasters as Bush did.

The world is noticing that "Hope" and "Yes we Can" were nothing more than buzz words and that no real change will occur domestically or in the international space. -

Even Turkey sees Obama's inability to do anything right and is trying to get AfPak to co-operate and shut down Taliban weapon smugglings along the border regions- where is US and UK - 'observing' as usual

He's no Tommy Douglas! But to have actually implimented universal health care in the US would have meant taking money from military spending and Obama did not believe that to be politically possible. My compliant on the health care front is that he has hardly tried to get what the majority of Americans need.

Foreign policy wise, the cave in to Israel on the settlement freeze was pathetic. It shows what a weak president Obama has been. The whole Palestinian question has been "business as usual". Treat then like animals and starve Gaza into oblivion.

Overall, I'd say Obama 's presidency is looking like a failure. I think he didn't want to become another Carter so he's avoided confrontation with the establishment as much as possible and seems to be playing politics on every issue. At least Carter had his moral principles and went down fighting for most of them. Even Bush stuck to his morally reprehensible ideology, whereas Obama no longer appears to have any moral compass. Unfortunately the only thing "reform" about Obama is the colour of his skin. The American public wanted change and they got it. By 2012 we should see a female President as the ole shell game continues. What else do you expect from a one party state?

Obama will bring change oh what a sick joke.I never expected any change from him rather i insisted that he will do da same what Bush did b4 him which Eric mentioned above bush 3rd term with a kinder, smiling, intelligent face. Nice fastidious article by Eric where he described Obama Report Card. C-
I guess C stand for Communist and yes indeed he's a communist and as i have said b4 that he has been brought up by those who wanna take revenge of USSR in Afpk that's why he's unable to stop da war and i am unable 2c any change other than faces. Here's no change except one white to black.
It shows the black-clouds of doom is surrounding on our heads more viciously than ever b4. That's why you hear daily blackwater blackwaters instead of whitewater.. Why not whitewater.? Because Bush gone and Obama take charge thats why and now I will suggest Obama please change White House into Black House.

Perennial GOP loser Alan Keyes says "Obama is a radical communist, and I think it's becoming clear. That's what I told people in Illinois and now everybody realizes it's true. He is going to destroy this country, and we're either going to stop him, or the Unites States of America is going to cease to exist."

Wow, you sure a bumbling buffoon and an idiot.

A communist? give me a break? What makes him a Communist? The fact that he wanted universal health care. Sweden and Canada have universal health care, I don't see them waiving a hammer and sickle. Get a grip. Oh and quoting Alan Keyes, one of the dumbest politicians in the USA and a right-wing nazi demagogue? Well done!

If you said that Alan is one of the dumbest politicians then i'd say that your each and every pol is dumbest and devil since da beginning of da 19th century. "Voters do have notoriously short memories."

Of course they do. They also have notoriously low intelligence, almost no culture, famously ignorant, and notoriously subject to the base quality of entertainment and "news" and manipulations of corporate media. What do you expect, in all realism, from such a collectivity numbering hundreds of millions? Good lord! This a country that re-elected Bush!

"He took on four of Washington’s most powerful lobbies – Wall Street, the Israel lobby, the military-industrial complex, and medical insurance – and lost all these battles...
He did nothing of the kind. Good heavens, man! Under him Wall Street--Goldman Sachs, above all--has filched billions! What data do you look at? He has escalated conflict in the Middle East--in Afghnistan. He has done nothing--nothing--as regards Palestine. His "medical" is a pay-off to corporate insurance. It is a disaster from any angle, except the money that would flow to--again--corporate entities.

Obama has become a prisoner of these special interests."

Appearance and reality. What Obama stood for was clear from the outset: the same Bush people were in place, especially the financial people. Big money financed him. The sop for the crowd, as regards Israel, should not fool you. With politicians, what counts are deeds--or omissions--not words, charisma or style. Obama, in several important respects, is Bush "in sheep's clothing," and indeed has gone beyond the Bush initiatives. At any rate, if Obama went against these "special interests" in earnest, he would almost certainly be shot. Too much at stake.

Or look at it another way. From the standpoint of the investment bank and the Pentagon, Obama gets an A+.

I would be lying if I said Obama hasn't disappointed me. At least he's better looking than the last guy.

And I shouldn't really be talking considering the guy who is running my country solves our problems by proroguing parliament. Maybe they'll just go away by themselves in a few months, eh Harper?

The architects and deliverers of ruin to the US economy and world reputation over the past decade are now comfortably making their way into US history insteads of facing charges on multiple fronts.
Remember, the charges laid against Germany at Nuremberg weren't for the Holocaust, they were for prosecuting an illegal war.

Likewise the previous US admin both invaded illegally and killed thousands of civilians in Iraq in the process.

So... what was Obama waiting for? Why did he duck?

He is in trouble. He should be.

Hey lord, plz read from my above link about Christmas how shrewdly satan turns santa....so you all satan in a santa/sacred faces who r hell-bent to destroy whole-wOrld like Haiti.

When Eric wrote previous article. Only one way to save the haiti.. I gave comment and in my 1st line i said,...How to save the world from greater cataclysm then tiny haiti that's more important and haiti which gets 2much media response due to UN presence know as peace keppin force...u r al satan in santa dress aka capital-communists aka C-minus. duffers.....both C-minus...means Peace else only Pi$$hit

The wild swings in the White House's ideological direction over the past two decades reflects an America that is divided along left V right; liberal V conservative lines. Americans might know what they want individually, but not collectively. Worse, the beneficiaries of relatively efficient government, infrastructure, economy, etc, Americans forget what is required to create and maintain the prerequisite structures of a modern liberal society. In Obama, they chose the attractive over the effective; the popular over the pragmatic...he's the latest in a line of presidents elected by reaction to something rather than a desire for something. Until Americans figure out what they want or at least what they need, they'll continue to have ineffective Presidents, while the rest of us watch...baffled.
