MY CRYSTAL BALL SAYS…………………………..
December 29, 2008
2008, to borrow the pithy phrase of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, has been an `annus horibilis.’ A propos, 2009 might be a good time for the old lady to give up the throne and cede it to her poor, long-suffering, 60-year old son, Prince Charles. What is she waiting for? His 80th birthday?
This past year will be remembered for the great financial panic of 2008.  It looks likely to share , with 1929, the distinction of being the day the sky fell in.

However, next year  may be even  worse.   The fast-deteriorating world economy, the reckless, medieval financial and fiscal remedies being applied to stop the decline, and the disastrous legacy of the Bush administration will combine to produce one hell of a dangerous mess.

World hotspots we should be watching in 2009.

*America’s $13.7 trillion bubble economy will continue to deflate.  After decades of intoxication on the steroids of reckless borrowing and cheap credit, America faces a monster hangover and rehab.  Call it, Saddam’s Revenge.

While America currently faces deflation, the US Treasury’s reckless printing of billions and billions must  eventually create a storm of inflation. A debased US currency, rising unemployment, and wiped out  savings will encourage extremism and political violence in the US, and around the world.  The ongoing riots in Greece by hooligans, unemployed, leftists, and anarchists may be a foretoken.

The Pentagon may not get $534 billion it seeks for this fiscal year to keep dominating the globe and waging the $15 billion per month wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Obama is already backing away from his election promises to withdraw US forces from Iraq. There is no end in sight to either conflict.

*Russia is in a surly mood, feeling under siege by NATO and convinced that fruitful cooperation with the west is not possible.   US and NATO’s foolhardy attempts to bring Ukraine and Georgia into the alliance risk igniting a truly dangerous crisis.  Thanks to the ruinous squabbling of Ukraine’s democratic politicians, that wobbly nation courts possible breakup, civil war,  even re-absorption into Mother Russia.

*Nuclear armed India and Pakistan, who fought three wars over divided Kashmir since 1947, are again poised for conflict over the Himalayan mountain state.  Tensions are rising fast.  Pakistan’s Army is growing restive at being forced to serve as a mercenary force to support the US war in Afghanistan.

The Mumbai massacre last September, likely conducted by Kashmiri separatists,  underlines the urgent need to settle this crisis.   Kashmir remains the world’s most dangerous nuclear confrontation. Between 40,000-80,000 Kashmiris, mostly  Muslims,  have died  since an anti-Indian independence struggle erupted in 1989.

*Iran continues to advance its nuclear program to the point where it could make weapons,  if it so desired.  Israel is pushing the US to attack Iran even though US intelligence says Iran has halted weapons programs.  Israel may attack on its own, hoping to draw the US into war against Iran.  This would expose US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan to heavy attacks and even  closure of the Gulf, which supplies 40% of the world’s oil.  The new Obama administration’s polices toward Iran may not be much less hostile than those of Bush & Cheney.

*Africa’s worst humanitarian crisis is not in Darfur but in Somalia. Half its ten million people face starvation.  Somalia’s only modestly effective government in the past decade, a moderate Islamic movement,  was overthrown by a US-Ethiopia invasion two years ago, creating anarchy and the ongoing wave of Somali piracy. The US and Britain may soon intervene militarily in Somalia and Zimbabwe.

China is dipping its toe into the Indian Ocean by sending a three-ship flotilla off the Horn of Africa to combat Somali pirates.  This is the opening salvo of a major  Indian-Chinese naval rivalry.

*The 60-year struggle Palestine conflict will continue, dashing hopes for peace.  American supporters of Israel’s right wing parties, led by Likud, have already blocked efforts by the new Obama administration to press Israel into land for peace concessions. This conflict will keep poisoning America’s relations with the Muslim world.

*The 80-year old  Husni Mubarak’s long, US-backed dictatorship in  Egypt may finally  end in 2009, igniting a major power struggle. Egypt could face an Islamic revolution led by the Muslim Brotherhood, or a nationalist uprising led by a later-day Gamal Abdel Nasser.

*Iraq will remain a violent, splintered wreck, under some form of foreign occupation.   Large numbers of US troops appear set to remain. Meanwhile, Iran is tightening its grip on eastern Iraq and over the US-installed puppet Shia regime in Baghdad.

*Afghanistan will be to President Obama what Iraq was to George Bush.  Pentagon plans to double the number of US troops there by spring will intensify the war and spread it ever deeper into Pakistan, which is already a smoking volcano of violence and rebellion.

Obama’s pledges to expand the war in Afghanistan have deeply dismayed many supporters. New US bases are being built in Afghanistan for what US Defense Secretary William Gates says will be a `prolonged commitment.’  In other words, the American Oil Raj will push into the resource-rich CaspianBasin, antagonizing Russia and China.

*China’s exports were the engine of its near 10%  annual growth. Now their sharp decline is sparking growing social unrest.  If China’s `social capitalism’ falters, watch out for an internal explosion.  Watch also for rising tensions in Thailand and Korea, where the death or overthrow of ruler Kim Jong-il, followed by `unanticipated reunification,’ scares the wits out of Seoul and Tokyo.

The only good thing one dares say right now about 2009 is that George W. Bush and Dick Cheney will finally be gone.  But the far rightists they  planted in the heart of the US government and legal system will continue to undermine America’s freedoms and threaten world security.

For all his dulcet words, we are not quite so sure that president-elect Barack Obama is really the apostle of peace he claims to be. He has about him a lean and hungry look, and speaks with the tongue of the Bush administration.

I have been an avid reader of both your columns and books and found you to be one of the most insightful and well researched journalists in the field of GeoPolitics.Your predictions for 2009 truly scare me and I hope that you are wrong about some of them.Unfortunately your track record speaks for itself and I expect you to be batting close to a 1000 as usual.Good luck to us all.....JD

--[we are not quite so sure that president-elect Barack Obama is really the apostle of peace he claims to be. He has about him a lean and hungry look]--

Aha!

So we are finally seeing this creep as I always saw him? A creep.

--[Nuclear armed India and Pakistan]--

Oh for the love of God..!!!

Do we say "nuclear armed United States"? Do we say "nuclear armed Britain"? etc.

What is the subtext here?

Good article, though... 9 out of 10.

I must admit, i ignored politics for most of my life. I was skeptical of the news and media and just interested in other things. Then I seriously got interested in the Obama campaign. I don't know if I liked Obama a lot but I certainly didn't want to see Palin/McCain running the country. Even though I'm canadian...our politics were rather boring.
Anyways, I got addicted to C-SPAN.That's how I got introduced to Eric Margolis when i watched him talk about his book, th American Raj. I had to buy it and read it in depth. It was the perspective I was seeking but could not find in our biased papers.
Now I'm reading everything I can about world politics and am trying to bring awareness to our media.
So Barack wasn't really my hope, it was Eric Margolis writing all along.
I just saw Barack on the news, as Gaza is being blasted by bombs. Not one word condemning Israel...all he said was he would want to protect his girl's from rocket's as Israel did.
You are right Rampart-he is a creep.

Wow.. that second document is very cool. If I were a political or corporate interest with billion of dollars on the line, I could think of no better investment than purchasing Congress. Reminds me of a Mastercard ad; "Renting Congress for 20 years: $46,000,000. Guaranteed military and political aid from the world's pre-eminent power: Priceless."

Indeed, even if that figure does not itemize the costs of paying lawyers and lobbyists to inundate agencies with paper, or to develop ideal "shopping strategies" each election cycle, I doubt that the PAC's expenses have exceeded $150M for the last 20 years. What a great investment strategy; these guys could teach Wall Street a thing or two.

With Mr. Obama taking control of the the US presidency, and having made lofty economic promises that will lead to hyperinflation coupled with Likud gaining power in the up and coming Israeli elections, I too have a prediction.

War with Iran: Let me indulge.

Seeing that this is no other way out of this fiscal sitution. A grand war with Iran would spur the Militarry, Financial, and Petro Complex to once again work together to make a perverse amount of money with the blood of the young. As well as serve Likud to retain power.

It worked durring WWII, why not know? The same old dog metality runs the show.

However, this is not 1939 or 1941. The world has changed as I am sure all of US in North America will shortly discover.

Happy New Year to all

Officially I've retired from predicting when the attack on Iran will happen. I said 2006, then 2007, then - if Obama was elected - before Bush left office. I've always believed it will be an Israeli first strike, with the US rushing in to protect the aggressor.

When I was in Derry City summer of '06 someone had spray painted on a wall: "support Hizbollah against Israeli scum". I was back this summer and the message is gone, along with the wall. I do wonder if, right now, someone is spray painting "support Hamas against israeli scum".

Let's see, June 2006 the IDF went after Gaza. Then in July Hizbollah intervened. Everyone forgot about Gaza in a hurry. How long before Hizbollah comes to Gaza's aid again? Who else, besides Nasrallah, will have the decency to help the Palestinians?

Please for heaven’s sake I wish Mr Eric's insights do not come true: I admire you dearly Mr Eric but I wish you may be wrong? give me some hope fake hope? any hope will do ; o my God! but I assume that God is not ready to bring peace to this wonderful Earth where people love to hate and where we all live in and fight for existence.

Thanks Oldfan1- for the link and for keeping me up late reading and trying to make sense of more info. My head is about to explode and yet I cannot stop smiling sarcastically: I bet it must be the "Saddam’s Revenge" better known as the Saddam's Curse. By the way the Arabic translation of the word "Saddam" means collision or conflict so go figure! and could Mr. Eric be right in his predictions for 2009 . Ah yes and Happy New year to Eric and to all his readers. well, let’s face it he knows what he is talking about : after all a US backed up war against Iran is the most "rational" progression of events where yet another rich oil reserve is being confiscated and bombed to make way for a new democratic Iran free from oil free from nuclear weapons and free way for the reconstruction effort to remap the world existence. Oh Mr. Eric: correct me if I am mistaken, what you were referring to sounds like world war 3 is in the works. And what is the role of the United Nation when it comes to Israel Palestinian conflict which may in fact sparkle a world war in 2010 which ear marks the twenty first century in a big blast. Please let me know will there ever be peace on earth? Or are we people destined to see the end of time in full digital effect live and unedited version of survival final edition! Hi Paul: I wish the Gaza conflict stays local and that Hizbollah will be smart enough not to participate in a stupid war unless there is a serious threat on Lebanese sovereignty which seems to be the soft ground for spying training and espionage. Will I grow old or will the Middle East melts away like Golden larva amidst a nuclear blast that will ignite more protest in the UN council. I never felt more helpless than today and more determined to make a difference... for now I think the best deal is to spread my recipe for Tabouli which seems to be a popular amongst the Arab and the Canadian refined taste buds.
Bon appetites and well 2009 will come and go and nothing will change more people will die from natural or manmade causes and yet more will be born to face the same fate: a never ending cycle of life and death. Enjoy your day as if it is the last one :)

Hi Eric, I think you meant Japan and Korea. I'm sure Thailand would be less concerned about the Dear Leader's health.

"Watch also for rising tensions in Thailand and Korea, where the death or overthrow of ruler Kim Jong-il, followed by `unanticipated reunification,’ scares the wits out of Seoul and Tokyo."

The real model I can see for Obama; is Tony Blair.

Unless he learns fast and acts quicker that is the route he will take.

A gloomy forecast, but one that is well backed up...pardon me for hoping you're wrong, even though I think you'll prove correct.

If The Toronto Sun ever stops publishing your column I will hold to my pledge to cancel my subscription...look forward to reading more in 2009.

Margolis forgot to predict when World War 3 will begin. Izreal and the Zionists are rubbing their hands and waiting in anticipation for WW3. Is the third World War not meant to be centered around the conflict of Muslims vs. Zionists? I heard it is also expected to cut the world population in half.

Anyone else who misses the Old World Order? This whole post-911 New World Order garbage is really getting on my nerves.

I´m sure you´ve noticed the mainline media have been using words like Armageddon, doomsday, the abyss and other like terms to describe the financial meltdown even before the current Israel/Palestinian conflict.

For those of you who don´t know, Armageddon comes from Har Megiddo which is located in Palestine, where Christ was born.

Another great column by the way. I can't help but watch with disdain at what's going on in Gaza right now. Innocent men, women and children getting wiped out by Israeli bombs and about all I hear from the U.S. is a few tut tuts. If this were Russia bombing Georgia, the U.S. would be crying bloody murder. What the hell is with this double standard anyway? The way I view it is all Israel is accomplishing right now is starting up a recruitment drive for future suicide attacks. And like you said: goodbye Bush and Cheney. You won't be missed.

You've seen a few 'tut tuts' from the U.S? From whom? That seems like a pretty good way to lose your job if you're in government. As for the media, I have seen few, if any, real criticism of the Israeli view from American commentators. Indeed, commentators in Israel have been more critical of operation 'cast lead' than their American media counterparts.

Alan Dershowitz joined the fray today, framing your proportionality concerns as an example of 'moral idiocy.' To most people, it's all about the targeting rather than the effect. The North American media stridently point out that Hamas targets civilians, while Israelis simply use high power weapons to target 'terrorists' who reside among civilians. That the Hamas approach leads to few actual civilian deaths, while the Israeli approach leads to many, is glibly dismissed as being "Hamas' fault."

In all honesty, I think that the Hamas rocket attacks were pretty ill-conceived precisely because they were so ineffective, and because they endangered the Gazan civilian population in exactly this way. I appreciate that, in the face of a strangling Israeli blockade and expanding settlements, Hamas needed to do something; I'm not really sure what would have been effective, but these useless rocket attacks seem particularly ineffective. They annoy ordinary Israelis, and give the IDF a valid pretext to roll out destructive military policy to perpetuate a destructive political policy.

Almost half of Israelis oppose, to varying degrees, the heavy-handed tactics of their government. Yet this operation enjoys an 81% domestic approval. In a country with political divisions, and a sympathetic Arab minority exceeding 20% of the population, it makes little sense to adopt tactics that inflame everyone. Assaulting state sovereignty, even with pinpricks, tends to do that. Sovereignty may seem like a silly concept, but it's one that people understand intuitively; when violated, it often provides a blanket justification for the kinds of clearly disproportionate "responses" the IDF has taken here.

Happy New Year, Eric. You Know, I think Barrack Obama is going to be "ok", as a president. He's going to go down in the history books, not because he's going to put America back on his feet. But merely because of his skin color. Sad. He has the potential to be a President who really makes a difference in the world, but he won't. The hard reality of it all is that the powerful pro Israel, big business and other Washington lobbyists will force his hand to keep the status quo. Like I said, he'll probably turn out to be an "ok" president. But then again, that's not hard to do considering the garbage he's succeeding.

Pat Buchanan is one of the few in America that dares touch upon this nonsense of Israel as an innocent victim.

More and more the issue for me is our position in the West. We are as much to blame for this crime as anyone. We could stop it, instead our politicians act as Israeli apologists. Yes you can blame the US politicians but the moral issue is so much larger than that. It is perfectly acceptable to allow such a crime to happen, just as we tolerated the attack upon Lebanon two years ago and also what's going on in Iraq/Afghanistan. No matter what crimes are committed it is "business as usual" in the West. A Great Depression would be poetic justice.

So our politicians and media lie to us(and themselves) for a reason. None of us want to face the truth. The truth is: the West is an EVIL society. There's no other way to sugar coat our violent streak.

Very pessimistic view. How about this:

- Great opportunity to invest in stocks at the latter part of 2009 when the market bottoms
- Take advantage of high yielding currencies and a low Euro against the Dollar
- More balanced world power between Europe, America and Asia
- With the US almost bankrupt or their Dollar is heading towards the bottom, Israel will find itself alone. To ensure survivability Israel will be forced to start negotiations with Abbas.
- N. Korea leader dies and it begins a new age of opening up to the world, just like Cuba is doing right now.
- Taleban will continue to mount aggressive attacks on NATO forces. However, the large presence of NATO and US forces in Afghanistan will keep their attacked under control (just like we saw in Iraq). Of course, we won't discount working with the locals to achieve stability.
- Pakistan is pretty much bankrupt. If India doesn't invade Pakistan, the Pakistanis will be forced to find an end to Kashmire in exchange for international aid.
- Once Oil prices start climbing again, alternative energy will pick-up its tracks. The Dutch machine will be at tip top shape to roll Europe into a prosperous 21st century.

I think we'll be faced with very tough times for most of 2009, but things will begin to turn for the better by the end of the year. Otherwise, who wants another WW-I and WW-II ?

I was watching the news this morning and heard the U.S. is blocking a U.N. resolution calling for an end to Israel's incursion into Gaza. Wow. This is really going to help America's image abroad. And the American media has been mute on the issue. I mean is it just me, or is CNN starting to sound more and more like Fox news? It's almost as if the U.S. goverment is giving Israel carte blanche with regards to Palestine. As for the incoming Obama administration, they're going to need all the help they can get. Probably a miracle. There seems to be this mindset within Washington that capturing and killing bin Laden is a magic bullet for their troubles. If only it were that simple. There are probably 10 guys ready to take bin Laden's place. A Washington that continues to turn a blind eye to Israel's human rights violations of the Palestinian people will not rectify anything. Obama cannot serve as President long enough to undo 8 years of Bush's ruinous and amateurish foreign policy. His girl friday, Condoleeza Rice might as well wave an Israeli flag and cheer on the atrocities going on in Gaza. The seeds for another 9/11 are surely planted. Way to go, Bush.

I could not have predicted 20 years ago supporters of Israel today calling the people of Gaza and the West Bank, "Palestinians." Twenty years ago, the people living there would have just been known as Arabs.

I do worry that if the problems between the Israelis and Palestinians do not get resolved, those violently opposed to Israel could seek secondary targets around the world. The Jews of Mumbai have just received the first taste of being a secondary target against Israel.

So, what's the answer? How do we solve all these problems? Everybody in the world's real good at throwing rocks but nobody has any answers. You need to come stronger than this, Eric.
